Some Notes about
Restoration
Many things can damage your records. Careless handling will cause scratches and noise, but the worst is mildew. Records should be stored vertically, in acid-free sleeves, at 50 degrees (F) with humidity of about 40 percent. Most people don’t do anything close to that. They simply stash their stuff in a closet. In just a few short years, that record surface could look like the one on the left below - spotted with mildew. The picture on the right is a record that was so completely covered in mildew we could not see the playing surface underneath. One half of it was cleaned for this picture. We are one of the few companies that can successfully remove mildew without damaging a non-acetate record. Don't try it yourself. There are no chemicals you can buy at the store that will remove mildew without damaging the record. The following pages will walk you through some of the steps of restoring old records and tapes. Please remember, while we may explain how something is done, it doesn't mean just anyone with a home computer is going to get great results. A lot of this stuff needs to be left to the professionals for the simple reason that getting a good result is hard work and depends on professional equipment and a lot of experience.
