The art of creating the sound or mood for something
Sound design can be a mood setter for a movie scene, the
sound effects and musical background for a play or film or putting together 3
hours of 60's music for a class reunion.
Sound Design also encompasses some forms of song or
music editing. An example are the songs performed on American Idol which
are edited for a 1:45
maximum. With proper copyright-holder approval, we can lengthen or
shorten a piece of recorded music (vocal or instrumental) to fit a
specific length. We frequently extend background music to cover chase
scenes or other specific mood-setting circumstances.
One of the most common uses of sound design is making
the various noises that you hear in a movie or TV program. The woosh of a
door opening in Star Trek, the sound of phasers firing in the space battle
scenes in Star Wars. The beep of a radar. These come from the mind of a
sound designer. Most are made with various software programs that generate
tones which are then modified with different filters, played backwards, or
whatever is necessary to recreate the sound you hear in your head.
Frequently we'll tape natural sounds and change them to be something
entirely different. You'd be amazed to learn what you can do with
the growl of a lion.
Most major production studios do their sound design
in-house or have a vendor they work with on a regular basis. Our work is
mostly with local plays, indie productions and last minute emergency
fix-it jobs. We specialize in period music because we have more than 4,000
songs in our library (from the 30's to today) and we like listening to
that stuff.
It's important to understand copyright considerations in
this area. You bring us the music which you purchased, we can build a
great sound design based on "fair use" law. If you use our music, royalty
payment to the record company may be required.
